Once upon a time there was a little girl with long golden hair and big, blue eyes. Her name was Phoenix.
She lived with her Mother, Father and two sisters in a little, old cottage in the middle of some cornfields.
Phoenix loved the cornfields. She believed they were hers. She knew all the creatures who lived in them and wished more than anything else in the world to be able to understand the languages they spoke to her. She especially loved it when the sun shone and she could run in and out of the cornstalks, chasing the butterflies, laughing and singing...
Storytellers of North America were sometimes called Twisted Hairs. A female Twisted Hair was the historian of women’s lore and Medicine stories that assisted young women in maintaining pride in their tribal roles.
The Storytellers were seen as a bridge to other times and ancient teachings. The children of future generations learnt from the Storytellers and applied the lessons of the Medicine stories to their own lives.
Medicine stories are told and retold year after year to keep the teachings of the people alive. Every story has many meanings and relates to life in a multitude of ways. Each time a story is retold, the level of understanding grows and expands along with the maturity of the listener.
The Native American’s way of thinking is very different in that the true message in the Medicine stories is not told to others- but rather people are allowed to use their individual gifts of intuition and observation to discern what the true meaning is for them. In this way everyone is allowed to learn at their own speed, in their own way and to apply or not apply the teachings to their lives.
